Senate Members Introduce Sportsmen’s Act
The NWTF applauds Senator Lisa Murkowski (R-AK) and Senator Martin Heinrich (D-NM), with along with original cosponsors, Senator Jim Risch (R-ID), Senator Joe Manchin (D-WV), Senator Deb Fischer (R-NE) and Senator Heidi Heitkamp (D-ND) who today introduced the Sportsmen’s Act of 2015 as a comprehensive sportsmen’s package of legislation aimed to benefit America’s sportsmen’s community.
The bill includes 13 provisions, several similar to those within the Bipartisan Sportsmen’s Act of 2014 from the 113th Congress. Among other provisions, the bill requires federal land managers to consider how management plans affect opportunities to engage in hunting, fishing and recreational shooting; enables states to allocate a greater proportion of federal funding to create and maintain shooting ranges on federal and non-federal lands; and directs up to $10 million annually towards Making Public Lands Public efforts to improve access to land locked public lands.
The NWTF has been working with Congress and our partner conservation organizations for several years to pass legislation included in the Sportsmen’s Act of 2015.
“We are thrilled that this bipartisian legislation has been introduced early in the 114th Congress,” stated NWTF Chief Conservation Officer Becky Humphries. “The NWTF is dedicated to working with these members to pass this important legislation.”
NWTF will continue to work with our partners and Members of Congress to have similar legislation introduced in the House of Representatives.
