“2019 Earth Day Dundee Day Clean-Up”
CLIFTON, NJ – Join the Clifton Green Team/Environmental Commission and the Clifton Health Department for Dundee Day, which will take place on Saturday, April 20th from 9 am till 12 pm at Dundee Island Preserve. The exact address is 4 Ackerman Avenue (to the right of the Route 21 on ramp). This is an event designed to reintroduce and reconnect local communities to the Passaic River. In doing so, our hope is to provide an opportunity for the public to begin seeing the River in a positive and to celebrate Earth Day. It is open to the public and includes a variety of agencies and community leaders. Please RSVP to email@example.com. The event will include a cleanup of Dundee Island Preserve and education about watershed pollution. During the cleanup, we will be planting some native plants, remove invasive plants, and conduct general maintenance including litter patrol. St. Mary’s 2019 Polish Festival
VIRGINIA – St. Mary’s Community invites everyone to their annual festival to celebrate its 100+ years of Polish heritage! Helena: The Story of Modjeska – Performance At Polish Museum of America
ILLINOIS – On April 26th 2019, at 8 PM. guests are invited to a spectacular event in the Sabina P. Logisz Great Hall of the Polish Museum of America, titled “Helena. The story of Modjeska”, by Kazimierz Braun. (Polish language performance) Helena will be portrayed by Maria Nowotarska, a professional actress with 60 years of experience in the performing arts. After finishing her studies in Krakow at the School for Higher Theatrical Studies, she worked at the nearby Juliusz Slowacki Theater. Since 1990, she actively takes part in the theater life in Toronto, and is the co-founder, artistic director, choreographer, producer, and actress at the Institute for Poetry, Music and Theater. Maria Nowotarska will be a guest of the Polish Museum of America for the second time. In April of 2017, performing alongside her daughter, she appeared in Kazimierz Braun’s “RADIATION – The story of Marie Sklodowska-Curie” occurring on the aforementioned honor’s 150th birthday anniversary. Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia General Meeting and Elections
PENNSYLVANIA – On Saturday, April 27, 2019 the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia will be holding its General Meeting and Elections at the Associated Polish Home located in North East Philadelphia from 2 to 4 PM. In addition, Dr. Jan Zaleski, biochemist and collector of Polish treasured art, will present a talk entitled: Polish Graphic Art 1918-1945 in the English Language. His career extends from the University of Warsaw of Poland to the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. He is also involved with the Kosciuszko Foundation, Philadelphia Chapter and PUL, Polski Uniwersytet Ludowy. Dr. Zaleski also has served as the judge on several occasions for the Adam Styka Art Competition and Sale that was associated with the National Shrine of Our Lady of Czestochowa in Doylestown, PA sponsored by the Polish Heritage Society of Philadelphia. He lives in Penn Valley, PA with his wife Margaret.

The talk will explore the wild mushrooms that fruit in Poland and in North Carolina, their ecological roles, their culinary value, and their taxonomy. Do the same mushrooms occur in both places? Van Cotter’s passionate interest in fungi began when he was assistant manager on a fruit tree farm in Michigan watching beautiful cherries succumb to fungal brown rot. For his graduate degrees he studied beech bark disease in New England and then boletes (friends of the forest) in the Himalaya. His career in the Crop Protection Industry was focused on finding new chemicals to control fungal diseases, nematodes and insects. In retirement he has been volunteering teaching and working mycological research projects at local Universities and in Farmer-to-Farmer assignments around the world in mushroom cultivation, crop protection and management of mycorrhizae in forest nurseries. Polonaise Society Offers Scholarships – The Hudson Valley Polonaise Society will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to graduating seniors who are of Polish descent. Graduating seniors who meet the criteria and who attended Orange County, NY high schools are encouraged to contact their Guidance Office for an application. Deadline is May 15th. Get Healthy-Be Fit Event to Help Promote Women’s Health!
CLIFTON, NJ – Kim Castellano, Director of Power of One and Laurie Kirwin, owner of Instep Fitness organized the first Get Healthy Be Fit Fundraiser event which was held in February. The event encourages women’s health and fitness which helped promote Power of One’s mission to Encourage Empower Equip people to live healthier lives. At the event, women spoke about getting healthy. Some women shared their stories of their journey from broken hips to attending the fitness center 3 days per week and using the gym to get out of the house to socialize. Lisandra Ortiz from In-Step Fitness lead the Zumba class with Salsa, Bachata, Cumbia, Samba, Merengue and American style dancing to international music. The event was well attended and is scheduled again on Tuesday, April 30 at Instep Fitness Studio located at 819 Van Houten Ave., Clifton, NJ. Fitness Classes for women are being offered all day to non- member guests for a $5 donation per class. CLIFTON, NJ – Have you noticed a little bit more purple in Clifton lately? The American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life of Clifton teams are “PAINTING THE TOWN PURPLE”. The purple ribbons are to raise awareness that those lives lost to cancer will never be forgotten, that those who face cancer will be supported, and that one day cancer will be eliminated. All traffic intersections have been tied with purple ribbons and they can be seen blowing beautifully on a windy day. The Relay for Life of Clifton will be held from 4:00 PM -12 midnight on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Clifton Stadium.
